How to Use the Number Rhyme System

1-minute read • Updated on

The number rhyme system is a memory technique that can be used to memorize numbers or as a peg list. Each number is turned into a picture that rhymes with the number, which makes the numbers easier to remember.

For example, the number 3 rhymes with “tree”. A mental image of a tree is easier to remember than a number like 3.

Some common mnemonic images that rhyme with digits are:

  • 0 = hero
  • 1 = bun or gun
  • 2 = shoe
  • 3 = tree
  • 4 = door
  • 5 = hive
  • 6 = sticks
  • 7 = heaven (you could use an image of an angel to distinguish it from a gate)
  • 8 = bait (fishing), gate
  • 9 = wine, line, or mine

How to Use Number Rhymes

There are two common uses for the number rhyme system:

  1. Memorizing short numbers
  2. Creating peg lists

Both of those are explained on the number shape system page. The technique is basically the same, except with the number shape system you create the mnemonic images based on the shapes of the digits instead of with rhymes.
