Animals

  • akesi -- reptile, amphibian
  • pipi -- bug, insect, spider

Yes/No

  • [verb] -- confirms
  • [verb] ala -- negates

People, Things

  • mi -- I, me
  • sina -- you
  • ona -- he, she, it
  • ni -- this, that
  • ijo -- something, anything, stuff, thing
  • jan -- person, somebody, anybody

Location

  • ma -- land, country, region, outside area
  • lon -- in, at, on
  • anpa -- low, ground, to lower, to defeat
  • insa -- inside, stomach
  • poka -- nearby, side, beside, with
  • monsi -- back, rear, behind

Verbs

These are verbs and also nouns.

  • jo -- to have ownership, possession of
  • lukin -- to see, look, vision, sight
  • pakala -- mess up, destroy, accident
  • unpa -- have sex with, sex, sexual
  • wile -- to want, need, desire
  • moku -- eat
  • pona -- fix, repair, good, simple
  • lawa -- to lead, leading, main

Adjective-like

Grammatical Words

  • li -- separates 3rd person subject from its verb. E.g., telo li pona ("water is good")
  • e -- introduces direct object except
