Why memorize a deck of cards?

I've heard that memorizing decks of cards is an excellent memory exercise. I understand that is important to exercise your memory, but wouldn't it be better to exercise your memory with something that's actually worth memorizing? Something useful, something that will turn into knowledge, like a vocabulary list or a book. Or is memorizing a deck of cards a better memory exercise? If it is, how? What benefits can memorizing a deck of cards have that memorizing a book, an article or vocabulary lists don't have? For someone who is not a memory athlete of course.

I only train my memory with vocabulary lists and I'm planning on starting to memorize articles too. But if memorizing a deck of cards actually has its benefits, I intend to start doing it too.

To me, memorizing cards helps me get used to my new memory palaces.

I used to just use a palace when I made it, just put information in it right away. Incidentally, I noticed that if I first use a palace for cards (or any other exercise, but usually I use cards) I need less effort to retain useful information in it for a longer time.

It is easy to bring a deck of cards with you and practise anywhere you want.

It gives you feedback on your progress.

You can compare your skill with others

Its fun !!!! (Very important. If you associate memorizing with fun it becomes easier. Lots of people think memorizing is boring and that makes it harder.)

When you only train vocabulary lists and articles, you will likely hit a plateau after some time. Memorizing a deck of cards every now and then can help to break through as it is something unusual that kicks you out of the comfort zone.
