Training

Hi

Is anyone else having a problem with the Words/Spoken Numbers segments of the training programs? (They appear on the same page as the Dice/Pi etc training programs.)

Every time I hit the 'generate words/numbers' button, the page just hangs there. I waited an hour recently and nothing happened. I have a very slow broadband connection, but it doesn't usually prevent me from accessing internet info.

Sorry about that. Is that problem still happening if you reload the page and try again? I just rebuilt the JavaScript and uploaded the new files to the server.

Hi Josh,

Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately, it's still happening even if I reload the page. (It's happening with the random symbols, too.)

I thought it might be because my Java installation was out of date, but I've updated it, and rebooted and am still having the same problem.

Strange -- it's working here. What browser are you using? Could you try loading it in a different browser (Firefox or Chrome) and see if it works then? I'm wondering if there might be a browser extension that is interfering with it.

Hello again, Josh.

I'm currently using Firefox. (I tried it again a few moments ago. Still no luck.) I tried loading it in Internet Explorer, but had the same result. I've just tried Chrome, too, and that hasn't worked, either. Basically, I get a grey page with a series of moving dots in a circle.

I'm guessing no one else is having a similar problem and, as you say, it's working OK for you. I'm not too technologically knowledgeable but your suggestion about the browser extension sounds plausible. (Finding it may be another problem! :) )

Sorry to bother you with this, but thanks for looking into it.

I'll reboot, run my CCleaner and try the other browsers again - just in case my cache is having any effect.

I'll let you know if I'm successful.

All the best for now,

James

Me again.

I've cleared my cache etc, restarted, tried the same three browsers - but still no luck. I also logged in on my wife's laptop, but with the same result. (Using Firefox.)

It's a puzzle.

Still, I've got plenty to occupy me with the Memory League.

And I still can't beyond 10 with the dice! :)

Sorry about that. Are you on a home network or at work or a cafe? I wonder if the AJAX request is being blocked at the network level.

Also, what operating system are you using?

Is anyone else out there having this problem? (The links to the pages are in comment #2, above.)

Hello again, Josh,

I am on a home network and am using Windows 8. (64 bit)

A friend of mine has just tried to generate the words and also gets the grey screen with a circle of dots to indicate loading. (But with no success.) He uses an Apple Mac OS10.11.6.

Me again!

Someone else I know has tried with Windows 10 and Mozilla/Google Chrome. But they also get the same grey screen and white dots.

Does the lack of any response from other forum members suggest I'm the only one using the basic training facilities? I hope not as, although I can't access some of the features, those I can are very good. (And thank you, Josh, for your hard work in providing them.)

Hello,
I wanted to bump this thread as I too am experiencing the same issue JamesW has reported. I also only have the issue with the same two training tools. I have tried on both Mac and Windows OSs.
My name is James as well so perhaps it is a James thing ;)
Thanks,
James P.

Sorry about that. I will try to debug it and then post an update here.

I'll add that I have also experienced the exact same issues (I just tried them both through the links Josh provided) that the others have.

That's very strange. It's working here for us. Could you please send me information about your system:

  1. operating system and version (examples: Windows 10 Pro or Ubuntu 16.04)
  2. browser make and version (examples: Firefox 50.1.0, Chrome 57.0)
  3. browser plugins you have installed (examples: Privacy Badger, LastPass, Self-destructing Cookies, Disable HTML5 Autoplay)

Also, if you know how to open up the browser console and view JavaScript errors, please email a screenshot of that to me: [email protected]. The screenshot might look something like this example screenshot, but with errors in the output area.

You can post the info here, email me, or send me a private message. That will help me see if there is some common feature between your systems that might be interfering with the JavaScript code or CDN settings.

Thanks!

In the meantime, I've changed one setting on the random words page that might fix it. If it goes away from that change, please post an update here, and I'll apply the same change to the spoken numbers script. :)

Josh,
No luck yet. I just tried the training section and now for some reason Random Symbols is not working as well as the original Random or Spoken Words.
I'm not really too tech savvy but for this test I used a MacBookAir 10.12.1 (Sierra OS) using Safari version 10.0.1 I don't think there are an extensions enabled. Also I tried using my iPhone 6+ and was unable to use Random and Spoken Words. I didn't have time to check the Random Symbols. I will try from another device/computer later and let you know what I experience.

Off Topic: Josh, will we (the end user) eventually be able to upload our own poetry text to practice in the poetry memorization program?
Thanks,
James P.

Josh,
My above post should have stated Memorize Words and Spoken Numbers. Sorry for any confusion.
Update: All of the training programs except Spoken Numbers works on the iPhone 6+

I will add that to the feature request list.

Thanks for the details about your devices. Are they on the same network, or is the phone using mobile data?

Josh,
Thanks for adding my suggestion to feature requests.
My devices use the same home network and I did not use mobile data while using my phone.
Hope that helps a little.

Thanks, your screenshot helped me find the bug. If there are still problems, try pressing ctrl-r to do a refresh of the page (which downloads the JavaScript again). If the scripts still don't work after that, let me know. :)

Success! I just tried both of them and they worked after a refresh. Thanks for the quick response and repair Josh!

Hello again,

As I've mentioned on another thread, I've been away from home, with no internet access since the end of last year - hence my delay in responding to this thread.

However, I'm now back home and able to access the random words/spoken words training programs - so many thanks for all your hard work, Josh. The random symbols still call up a grey page with the circle of dots going nowhere - but there's enough there with all the other options to keep me well occupied. For various reasons, I haven't been able to do any real memory since late December, so I've a lot of catching up to do!

Thanks again, Josh, and all the best,

James

Sorry about that. I've just fixed it and checked the entire application for other cases of the same bug. If it still doesn't work, let me know. :)
