The answers to most of your questions are "practice".
There is no secret trick, no shortcut, just practice. The 'stories' are generally made using the method of loci, but besides that, all practice.

My time in the beginning was 20 minutes or so, nothing too impressive. But then I did it again, and again, and again, and times got faster. Once you get down to 5 minutes, things can get slightly more complicated to get your times to improve (but nothing too hard), but lets just get you to 5 minutes first.

Just sit down and memorize the deck, that is the best thing you can do in the beginning :)

I am starting as well , this is how i practice now ,

I take 4 decks of cards and shuffle them together , then i go through the cards and say the name of each character as fast as i can without screwing up. Then I take the four decks and walk through my memory palace 2 times forwards and 2 times backwards. Then i make an attempt and memorize a deck. Usually takes me about 12 minutes , upwards to 15 sometimes.
