Can I color my cards for competitions?

If you know about tournament Speed Cards rules, please help me with this question.

I'm beginning to suspect that coloring the clubs in green, or the club background in green and similarly the diamonds in yellow would help me recognize the card faster.

So, I was wondering, if I decide to color my cards this way, using a green and yellow highlighter, are they still going to be accepted at official memory competitions which welcome players bringing their own cards?

That sounds a little bit dodgy - I can see people raising objections to the idea of altering cards yourself, with a pen.

On the other hand, the "Arabic" cards do have different colours for each of the four suits, and I'm pretty sure there are commercially-available "normal" cards with different-coloured clubs and diamonds, so I don't think anybody could object to you using those. Probably a question that needs an "official" ruling from someone important. :-)

Thanks for this answer zoomy; it helps. Since Arabs aren't known as the fastest card memorizers, it suggests that my idea here is probably just another dead end idea of mine.

I know that on smaller competitions, they might let you do that. Seen someone do that around here. He was allowed to color the cards given to him by the competition. If it is faster, I don't know, I still beat him by over 5 minutes, but I guess it can be just as fast if you practice a lot.

But I got now clue how bigger competitions deal with it.

Don't give up on the idea, Simon - personally, I think it's a very good one! It should reduce the chance of confusing hearts and diamonds at a quick glance, and so make you faster. It wouldn't work for me, because I've been doing it for so long, I'd still mix up the suits that used to be the same colour, just as much as usual, but for someone relatively new to card-memorisation, I think it would be a big help.
