Memorizing a set of events/dates on a quarterly basis

Hello, I am a newbie when it comes to mnemonics so I'd be glad for any feedback on my system for memorizing a set of events/dates on a quarterly basis: basically - am I doing it right? is this gonna work?

I would like to store in my memory main events related to political affairs of the Middle East region. For most of them I am fine with remembering month and year of occurence. Moreover, the effort should also create a list of main events for each quarter year which I can easily review.

I started by creating a memory palace where I put 13 events for October, November and December 2016. An event per location. I also imagined a big number which I have to pass or rather go through for each month. So I start crossing 10 (for October) and go through couple of events-location for this month, then I cross through 11 and know I see events which happened in November, then the same thing for December.

It seems to me it works well but some issues I have already encountered:

  1. how to add things: in case, for example, I forgot one event for October, can I re-create the walk through the palace and by adding a location (if there is this possibility, I can find good peg/location)?);
  2. how to emphize what country is referred to: most of the information is related to information about countries, i.e. Egyptian president did this, Iranian parliament that, Iraqi armed group another thing... it does not seem essential as I use various ad-hoc ideas or just remember that this guy at this location representing X is from this country... but I was thinking if not to emphasize&systematize this info by using flags or some other mnemonics device (a particular Yemeni dagger always signals Yemen, etc.);
  3. what to do if I want to remember exact date: I've been developing image-numbers (0-100) system (which for me seems much more easier, using my own "natural" associations, then to use dominic or major system) so I am gonna use this images with the locations in the palace and the images representing the events I am trying to remember;
  4. how to lock events/processes spaning i.e. several months: usually some more generalized info then one particular event, so what I did in the first palace is to have other area of this palace for this kind of info, where the implied time-stamp is i.e "october to december 2016)"

Makes sense? Thank you.

If you place the locations with enough space between them, you can add more locations. I think it's possible to make a location out of almost anything, especially if you link images together (between locations) using the story method.

That seems like a good idea, if you aren't separating countries by location.

Sounds good. You might only have to remember the last two numbers of the years, depending on what you're memorizing.
