Can someone point me in the right direction?

Hey all!

I'm disappointed to say that I think I'm a few years past the climax of this little sub-community. That said, the teachings herein and the processes here are still super interesting to me.

I essentially have two goals when it comes to memory training.

1. Be able to perform well in foreign languages.
a. Be able to maintain a logical, flowing memory of syntax,
b. Be able, by some method, to memorize vocabulary in an effective way.

2. Be able to remember more of what I am reading as I go throughout my "to-read" list.

-

In terms of reaching these goals, I'm not really using any major techniques for 1a. I'm just kind of aimlessly wandering around, hoping I stumble into quality tools like Michel Thomas.

For 1b, I am using Anki, but it's a combination of Anki and rote memorization. There's got to be a better way to go about it.

For 2, I have no clue. I know that "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a ****" by Mark Manson is my favorite book, but I couldn't attempt to pinpoint any specific details about it.

I've read "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine, but I would be hard pressed to deliver even the briefest of summaries on it now.

-
I was introduced to this whole community through Joshua Foer's "Moonwalking with Einstein" and now I'm starting to get my basics done by learning the Major system for memorizing numbers.

Hopefully now, I'll learn my girlfriend's phone number.

Foer's book and a few scattered youtube videos "The Great Courses" are my extent of research so far.

What should my next moves be? What to I begin to look into, read, and/or practice next?

Hello, Dillion! I'm Sora, You can always work on creating artificial or natural memory palaces such as creating a memory system based upon these places. Imagine the tile and the wood works, the sheet Rock and the ceilings in descriptive phrases in ways that have amazing synergy with your memory such as descriptive phrasing typology. Imagine a plane of Grass land or Prarie to be Lush, Serene and flowing with a subnatural abundance of colors and hues..

I would urge you to create different places based on information found around your external environment such as the places of Chairs, the tiles below etc..

ALSO post your stats here weekly. Weekly? Weekly. As daily rudiments, too much time and doing it daily could affect your transition time and motivation.

Good Luck and hope to see you around!

You made it in time. We're still growing rapidly, with over 15,000 registered members now, and many new features coming soon. :)

Have you seen the Beginner's Portal and the FAQs?

I think it would be useful to learn:

  1. Number shape system
  2. Number rhyme system
  3. How to memorize the order of red/black in a shuffled deck of cards
  4. How to memorize pi
  5. An introduction to memorizing numbers
